Two people can sell copper on the same morning at the same yard and get different rates. Nothing dishonest has happened. One sold clean bright wire and the other sold a drum of mixed offcuts with brass fittings still attached.
Copper follows the day's market, and no web page can tell you today's number. What a page can tell you is which grade you are holding, because that is the part you control.
The grades in plain words
- Bright wire, often called millberry. Clean, bare, bright copper wire, no coating, no oxide, nothing attached. The top rate.
- Number one copper. Clean tube, bus bar and heavy wire. Bare, unalloyed, no solder, no paint, no fittings.
- Number two copper. Copper that has been used and shows it. Soldered joints, paint, heavy oxide, thin gauge. Same metal, more work to clean up, lower rate.
- Insulated cable. Priced on the copper you get back after stripping, not on gross weight. A thick armoured cable and a thin data cable of the same weight are nowhere near the same value.
- Motor and transformer copper. Windings, still in the housing or already pulled. Paid on recovered content, so the rate depends on how much steel and varnish comes with it.
Cable: strip it or sell it as it is
The honest answer is that it depends on the diameter, and the maths is not complicated. Thick power cable holds a lot of copper per metre, so stripping it recovers enough to cover the labour. Thin control and data cable holds very little, and a day of somebody's time will cost more than the copper you free up.
If you have a big coil sitting in a store and staff with spare hours, strip the heavy stuff and sell the thin stuff as it is. If you do not have the hours, sell all of it as insulated. Just do not spend two days on data cable and expect a bright wire rate.
What a price for today really means
Copper moves on the world market and the UAE rate follows it. A number quoted on Sunday is not a promise for Wednesday. When we quote, it is the rate for that day, and for the load in front of us.
Sorted loads get a rate per grade. Mixed loads get one number for the lot, and that number sits near the bottom of the grades in the pile. That is the cost of not sorting, and for a small load it is often the right trade.
What costs money on a factory load
Brass fittings left on copper tube, which drags number one down. Steel clamps and brackets. Mixing clean offcuts with soldered pipework. Oily swarf in a drum, where you are paid by weight and part of that weight is coolant.
The fix is boring and it works: one bin per grade, labelled, next to where the material is produced. It never becomes a sorting job because it never becomes a pile.
Storing copper on site
Copper is the one metal worth locking up. It is the highest value thing in most workshops by weight, it is easy to carry, and a drum of bright wire left by an open shutter is a temptation nobody needs.
Keep it inside, keep it dry, and keep it off the floor. Copper that sits in the wet picks up oxide, and heavy oxide is what turns number one into number two. That is a real drop in rate for metal that was clean when it came off the job.
Covered drums with the grade written on the lid solve both problems at once, and they make the pickup faster because nothing has to be identified twice.
Getting a real number
Send photos and a rough weight. You will get the rate for the day and a price for the load, and everything is weighed in front of you on collection. If you produce copper every month, a standing pickup keeps the grades clean and stops the store room filling up.
See what we buy, or send the details and we will price it the same day.
Common questions
Why does the copper price change every day?
Copper follows the world market and the UAE rate moves with it. A number quoted on Sunday is not a promise for Wednesday, which is why no honest page prints a fixed rate. Call on the day you want to sell and you get that day's number.
Should I strip cable myself before selling?
It depends on the thickness. Heavy power cable holds enough copper per metre to cover the labour of stripping. Thin control and data cable does not, and a day of somebody's time will cost more than the copper you recover. Sell the thin stuff as insulated.
What is millberry copper?
Millberry is the trade name for clean bright copper wire: bare, unalloyed, no coating and no oxide. It is the top grade and the top rate.
Do you buy motor and transformer windings?
Yes, either still in the housing or already pulled. They are paid on recovered copper content, so the rate depends on how much steel and varnish comes with them.
