Transformer scrap in Abu Dhabi: windings, oil and what decides the rate

Short answer: Transformer scrap in Abu Dhabi is valued on what is inside: copper or aluminium windings, silicon core steel and the steel tank. Oil filled units must be drained and the oil handed to a licensed handler before we take them. A photo of the nameplate lets us estimate the metal before anyone lifts the unit.

Transformers are the heaviest single items in most electrical rooms, and they last a long time. When one is finally retired, it is usually because a plant is increasing its load, a substation is being rebuilt, or a unit has failed and repair no longer makes sense. Either way, the old transformer sits on its plinth until someone works out what to do with it.

This guide explains how we look at transformer scrap: which units come up, what metal is inside, why the oil has to go first, and what decides the rate.

Which transformers come up for scrap in Abu Dhabi?

We see two broad types from factories, utilities contractors and facility managers around Musaffah, ICAD and KIZAD.

Oil filled distribution and power transformers

These are the familiar grey or green tanks with cooling fins or radiators on the sides. Distribution transformers sit at the plant or building level and step the supply down to the voltage the equipment uses. Larger power transformers sit in substations. Inside both, the core and windings are submerged in mineral oil, which cools and insulates them. That oil is the reason the job needs planning.

Dry type and cast resin units

Dry type transformers are used indoors, in buildings and plant rooms, where oil is not wanted. The windings are either open with varnish insulation or fully cast in epoxy resin. They are cleaner to handle because there is no oil, but cast resin windings take more work to recover, because the copper or aluminium is locked inside the resin.

What is inside a transformer, part by part?

A transformer is mostly three things: windings, core and tank. Each goes to a different place once the unit is dismantled.

PartMetalShare of the valueNotes
Copper windingsCopper wire or strip, paper or enamel insulatedHighestMost of the value in a copper wound unit
Aluminium windingsAluminium foil or wireMiddleCommon in newer distribution units, worth less than copper
CoreGrain oriented silicon steel laminationsMiddle to lowerHeavy, sold as electrical steel once stripped
Tank, fins and frameCarbon steelLower per kg, large weightGoes back to steel making with other heavy steel
Bushings and fittingsPorcelain, brass or copper terminalsSmallTerminals recovered, porcelain is waste
Oil, paper and resinNot metalNoneHandled as waste, never weighed as metal

The split between those parts depends on the design and rating of each unit, which is why we do not quote a transformer by its gross weight alone.

Why must the oil be drained before we take it?

Transformer oil is a hazardous material under Abu Dhabi's waste rules. It has to be drained by the owner or their contractor and handed to a licensed handler, with the transfer documented. Tadweer is the waste authority in Abu Dhabi, and federal guidance on hazardous waste comes from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. The oil goes to a licensed handler, and we take the transformer once it has been drained.

Older units need one more step. Transformers built before the 1980s may contain oil with PCBs, a group of chemicals that are banned and must be disposed of under strict control. If the unit is old or the nameplate is missing, get the oil tested before anything else. A unit with PCB oil follows a separate route, and it is not something we collect.

Once drained, the tank still holds a film of oil, and so does the paper insulation on the windings. Keep drained units upright, closed and on a hard standing. Tell us how and when the oil was removed so we can plan the lift and the trip back to Musaffah.

How is transformer scrap valued in Abu Dhabi?

Three things decide the rate: the winding metal, the size of the unit, and how much stripping it needs.

Copper or aluminium windings

This is the biggest single factor. A copper wound transformer is worth noticeably more than an aluminium wound one of the same size, because copper carries a much higher metal price. Both prices follow the international market on the London Metal Exchange. Once recovered, the copper is graded the same way as any other copper, which our page on how copper scrap grades affect what you are paid explains in detail.

Why the nameplate helps

The nameplate tells us almost everything we need before we see the unit: the rating in kVA or MVA, the voltages, the year, the total weight, the oil weight, and often the core and windings weight as a separate line. Some plates state the winding material directly. With that, we can estimate the metal content and give you a firm basis for the quote. A clear photo of the plate is the single most useful thing you can send.

Dry type units with cast resin windings sit a step below an oil filled unit of the same rating and winding metal, because the resin has to be broken away before the metal can be recovered.

How does a transformer leave the site?

Small distribution transformers can be lifted onto one of our two hiab trucks in one piece. Larger units may need to be dismantled where they stand: radiators removed, the tank opened, and the core and windings lifted out in sections. Our crew can cut and lift on your site, with the hazard assessment and working method agreed before the truck arrives under our ISO 45001 system. The unit must already be disconnected, isolated and handed over by your authorised electrical team.

At our yard at Musaffah M42 every part is weighed and graded, and you receive the weight, grade and rate on paper. The price we quote is the price we pay, with nothing quietly deducted at the weighbridge. The tank steel goes back to UAE steel making, and the copper or aluminium goes to non-ferrous buyers. You can read more about our certificates and our team of 32 on the page about Blue Eden. If the transformer is part of a wider plant clearance, our guide to selling machinery and heavy equipment for scrap covers the rest of the plant.

What to send us for a quote

  • A clear photo of the nameplate on each unit.
  • Photos of the transformer from two sides, showing radiators and bushings.
  • Whether it is oil filled or dry type, and whether the oil has been drained, by whom, and when.
  • The year of manufacture, or an oil test result if the unit is old.
  • Where it sits: substation, plant room or yard, and the access for a truck.

Our office is open Monday to Friday, 7 am to 4 pm. Call or WhatsApp +971 55 229 2646, ring the landline on +971 2 622 4258, or fill in the enquiry form with the nameplate photos attached.

Common questions

Do you take transformers that still have oil in them?

No. The oil must be drained by the owner or their contractor and handed to a licensed handler under Abu Dhabi waste rules before we collect. Tell us when and how it was drained so we can plan the lift.

Is a copper wound transformer worth more than an aluminium one?

Yes, noticeably. Copper carries a much higher metal price than aluminium, and the windings are where most of a transformer's value sits. The nameplate often states the winding material.

Why do you ask for a photo of the nameplate?

The nameplate gives the rating, year, total weight, oil weight and often the weight of the core and windings. That lets us estimate the metal content before anyone lifts the unit, so the quote has a firm basis.

What happens with very old transformers?

Units built before the 1980s may contain oil with PCBs, which are banned and need controlled disposal. Get the oil tested first. A unit with PCB oil follows a separate route and is not something we collect.

Can your crew dismantle a large transformer on site?

Yes, once it is disconnected, isolated and handed over by your electrical team and the oil is out. Radiators come off, the tank is opened and the parts are lifted out, with the hazard assessment and method agreed before the truck arrives.

Copper Scrap Grades and What They Do to Your Rate

Copper is priced on the day's market, but the grade decides which side of that price you land on. Here is what the grades mean in plain words, and when stripping cable is worth the labour.

Enquiry

Tell us what is on site

Copper cable off a site, batteries from a workshop, or a full production line from a factory. We price it the same day and handle the lifting.

Collection request

Answered the same day

A price costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Your number is used to answer this enquiry, and that is all.
